Kalimani / Zahra

A Story Within

Zahra (7) and Mohammad (6) live in the remote village of Kalimani, near Jargalan, 50 km from Ashkhaneh. With around 150 families, this semi-desert area suffers from severe poverty—even clean water is lacking.

As Maryam from our team reminded me through a poem by Abdolmalekian:

Tell me, how should I smile,

when they’ve laid landmines around my lips?

We are the explorers of dead-end alleys,

bearing weary words.

This time, send a prophet—

one who only listens.

More about this location

Kalimani is a village in the Maneh and Samalqan region, located about 50 kilometers from the city of Ashkhaneh. It is home to around 150 families, totaling a population of approximately 750 to 800 people. Its location in a dry and semi-desert area has brought numerous challenges to the community.

Each year, groups of university students and seminary students travel to this region as part of volunteer relief programs to alleviate poverty. However, Kalimani remains deprived, with hardship still an uninvited guest in this village and several neighboring ones.

Residents complain about the lack of even basic necessities, such as access to healthcare, a proper sports hall, the incomplete implementation of the rural development (Hadi) plan, and the absence of safe drinking water.

As we sit and listen to the villagers, they speak of their daily struggles. Despite the annual efforts of volunteers, which help ease some of the hardships in Kalimani and nearby villages, deprivation is still clearly etched into the face of this village.
