In the Turkmen Yard

from €280.00

A Story Within

Aman, 67, a farmer, merchant, and translator of Turkmen literature. Locals called him “Amoo” (uncle). We took this photo in the back yard of his house. Though he rarely wore traditional Turkmen clothes, he changed into them just for the shoot. Behind him was a vast green field, lined with power poles. He was a moody man—sometimes cheerful, sometimes irritable. We took this image around 6 a.m.

More about this location

Iranian Turkmens (Persian: ترکمن‌های ایران; Turkmen: ایران تۆرکمن‌لری, romanized: Eýranly Türkmenler) are a branch of Turkmen people living mainly in northern and northeastern regions of Iran. Their region is called Turkmen Sahra and includes substantial parts of Golestan Province of Iran. The number of Turkmens in Iran is estimated at 0.5 to 2.4 million people.

The city is populated by Kurds, from various tribal backgrounds, who adhere to Sunni Islam. However, the Jaff tribe is the main tribe in the city. The two Sufi branches Naqshbandi and Qadiriyya have a strong presence in the city as well. The locals speak GoraniSorani and Persian.
